A local to the islands who told me, in response to my (hopefully) noninvasive "are you from here?" line of questioning, that, though he now abashedly has "luau feet," he went barefoot through the fourth grade
Reading A Night to Remember, by Walter Lord, about the sinking of the Titanic. He said that, when he takes the ferry home later today, he'll have to read with the cover of the book down.

He'd never read anything about the Titanic and figured it was time, as he spent several years working as a waiter on the SS Constitution and SS Independence cruise ships. He loved his job and always got the butterflies before the new guests would come on board. The floor plan of one of these ships (I can't remember which one) made finding the dining room difficult, which resulted in currents of unease. On an island that a ship is, the evolution of discontent can be charted. Waiters suffer from architecture.

He usually reads books about the history of flight. He is a student private pilot. Once, within the span of about thirty minutes, he got to see the sun rise twice and set once, and in the east. When you're a pilot, he said, you get to see things in different ways, and then explain them to your mother! (It took me two tries to understand the sun rising and setting scenario. It helps to put your hands side by side, call one the sun and the other the plane and then mime the sun rising and then the plane taking off and landing.)

Reading a biography of Marco Pantani, an Italian road racing cyclist. His advice -- people should read more about Marco Pantani and less about Lance Armstrong.

Marco Pantani was called "Il Pirata" for his aggressive style and was one of the best climbers in history. Though, Marco Pantani had his problems -- he died of a cocaine overdose in 2004 at the age of 34.

Except for twenty-five years of marriage in L.A., he's lived his whole life on the island. His sister lives here and he gives the books he reads to her and she gives them to someone else -- she reads romances.

Reading We Hear the Christmas Angels: True Stories of their Presence, a collection of stories published by Guidepost. She went with her parents to the Once a Month Church, and the pastor's wife loaned her this book. Now that she's reading it, she's noticing angels. Yesterday, when she was driving, her car stalled and she had to pull over at the bus stop and her kids were like - Oh my gosh, what happened - and then, up a few yards, they noticed a police car parked in the middle of the road with its lights off which, had she not reacted quick enough, they would have crashed into.

Favorites -- The Bible and Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code.

If she were to write a book, it'd be about all of God's blessings.

Reading Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand. Before this he was reading America: The Last Best Hope, by William Bennett and biographies of Ron Paul and Jesse Ventura.

School had destroyed his natural desire to read and it was only after figuring out his own interests and surfing the internet for book titles, that he was able to find subjects he was interested in, and began reading nonfiction.

His car just got stolen and now he has time to read on the bus. This book, which his housemate recommended, is the first book of fiction that he has read on his own, without having been assigned in school. He is loving it. Flabbergasted, really, by how great it is to read fiction.

His favorite book of all time -- The Book of Mormon.

A good book that is recommended for students who are becoming nurses (though she personally hasn't read it yet), to give a patient's perspective, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, a memoir by Jean-Dominique Bauby.

Favorite book -- Siddhartha, by Hermann Hesse.

If she wrote her own book, it'd be about her own personal journey in choosing a career and a path in life, which isn't over yet. With graduation coming in a few days she's at a critical point and is divided fifty-fifty about leaving the island, where she grew up. It's either here or Seattle, but she knows that she wants to be a critical care nurse.

Reading Warrior, by Marie Brennan. Her favorite book -- Frankenstein, by Mary Shelly. Back then, she said, people had a more complex way of thinking and had greater imaginations. Now, she said, people use the same words over and over again.

The best author of contemporary writing -- Stephenie Meyer. She's the Herman Melville of today because of her in-depth descriptions.

She also likes Linda Lael Miller, who writes well-researched historical romance. If all factual information were fed into stories, she said, people would be a hell of a lot smarter.

Reading A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future, by Daniel H. Pink. He likes to "geek out" on subjects. Right now he's reading about the mind. He comes to the bookstore and pulls all the books off the shelves and reads what he thinks is good in each one. Why not just doing a google search? --when you do that, you don't get quality information. You get what's manipulated by people in advertising who want to sell you things. Books have higher quality information.

Other subjects he's been "geeking out" on -- linguistics, programming, kung fu, yoga, learning how to read fast, and caffeine. Apparently, as he learned about caffeine, you never lose the cognitive benefits of caffeine even after years of abuse.

At a beauty salon in Ala Moana shopping center,
Usually I just photograph books, because what wows me is that people, with all the media that surrounds us, might care enough about what an author has to say, to invest themselves in a two-hundred, three-hundred page book. But, reading magazines is still a good thing and, from a distance it looks like the same thing. And,when you stare long enough, the reader looks up and wonders why you're staring and so arrouses suspcion and I felt to compelled to talk.

Reading an article in People magazine entitled An African Boy's Healing Year, by Alexandra Rockey Fleming and Richard Jerome, about the intersection of the lives of an American woman and a Zimbabwean teenager's. The story, he said, is touching. It's about people helping people.

If he were to write a book, it'd be inspirational, full of stories of brawny courage, people dealing with problems like this woman in the article he's reading. It cheers him up to hear stories about people doing things beyond themselves.

When he reads books, though, they're technical, about plumbing or carpentry.

A favorite book -- The Celestine Prophesy, by James Redfield. It's a good lesson of awareness and paying attention to the positive aspects of life, and how to connect and interrelate.

He doesn't read much on his own. Right now he's studying to update his certification. He's a psychoanalyst and works with soldiers who've come back from combat.

As a teenager a book that helped him athletically --he played basketball and baseball--was Mental Training for Peak Performance: Top Athletes Reveal the Mind Exercises They Use to Excel, by Steven Ungerleider.

A book that got him thinking about this was Kahana: How the Land Was Lost, by Robert Stauffer. He wrote this book by analyzing land records and sorting facts in a data base. The book talks all about how land is divided, like into ahupua'a, which are the wedges of mountains that run into the sea.

A favorite book -- Mutant Message Down Under, by Marlo Morgan, about a woman who goes to the Australian outback and is abducted by an Aboriginal Tribe.

Other good books he's read recently -- Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen R. Covey and books by Catherine Ponder, an inspirational author.

When he was a child he liked reading encyclopedias and Mark Twain.

After photographing tourists at the beach, I stopped in at the Waikiki Public Library and asked where I might find locals reading. The librarian suggested the Ala Moana Center--a shopping mall in Honolulu. I got on the bus, found the mall, and, while roaming around looking for readers, happened upon a book signing at the Kahala Sportswear store. The host thanked a crowd of outdoorsmen for coming out in the worst storm of the year.
Legendary Hawaiian surfer, Gerry Lopez, was in town to talk to a group of "in the know" surfers -- the event wasn't publicized other than word of mouth.

I stopped to listen and felt immediately relaxed. Up to this point, I'd been feeling sort of "go-go-go." I was anxious--the goal of the trip had been to photograph 100 readers in 48 hours. Listening to Gerry Lopez slowed me down and made me think. He talked about his snowboarding as well as surfing experiences. When you snowboard, he said, the mountain doesn't move. When you surf, it does. This was in response to a question someone asked about what goes through your mind when you're about to.... Wipe out? Gerry Lopez asked, finishing the question -- laughter -- and then he went on to talk about the need to relax and go with it. He said that life is more like surfing than snowboarding because, like a wave, it changes.

As I listened, my mind mellowed out. I listened to stories. It helped me to have a good remainder of my trip. People smiled at me. I could feel the aloha spirit. One of his friends, who'd played his harmonica for the event gave me a warm hug and welcomed me to the island.

The next day I spent touring the island, following the full route of the 55/52 bus, all the way up to the North Shore. When I returned to my hotel I was tired. I took a hot bath and opened the book. The first story was about how he learned to surf, at age ten. I could feel the gentle rocking of the surf board as his mom pushed him out into the water, and hear her voice when she suggested that, next time, he try standing up.
His favorite book -- Autobiography of a Yogi, by Paramhansa Yogananda. He's constantly reading it.

Reading Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer. Her favorite book of all time? Without hesitation -- Harry Potter.

Recently she read a book about two boys, one Jew and one German during World War II. The German boy tries to help his friend survive--just be cause the world is at war doesn't mean kids are at war, too.

She's a high school math teacher and is here to run her sixteenth (!!!) marathon with her friends.
After this interview it began pouring rain and I went to have dinner at the Rainbow Drive-in....and then, through the clouds I saw an oasis: the Waikiki Public Library! where I got good advice on where to find readers on rainy days and, even better, readers who are local. Not that tourists aren't great, but I wanted to photograph both tourists and locals.

Reading Les hommes qui n'aimainent pas les femmes, a triology by the Swedish author, Steg Larsson. The author is really popular in Quebec right now, where she lives. He died (unpublished) in 2004, of a cardiac arrest. It was right after he gave the editor the trilogy.

She loves murder mysteries, but not like the ones by Robert Ludlum.

Her favorite books -- The English Patient, by Michael Ondaatje; Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, by Robert Pirsig; the Harry Potter series, by J.K. Rowling.

Her own book--it'd be about the challenge of being a mother.

While we talked her preschooler ran back and forth from ocean to beach. She has yet to attend a book club. Usually she's too busy, but always finishes the books. She's hoping to make it this time!

Good books she's read recently -- The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd and the Twilight series, which she said wasn't "great" but a page-turner. She thought the author broke too many rules.

Other books she likes -- fantasy! like The Lord of the Rings. Though, these are not the sort of books people choose for her book club.

A favorite book -- Obsession of the Soul, by Nicky Cruz, about how sharing the gospel should be an obsession. He used to be a gang member in New York City and now goes to different places and shares the gospel. She hadn't been religious until she went to Guatemala and when she returned she joined a church....where she met her husband!

If she were to write her own book, it'd be about dreams. She quoted Eleanor Roosevelt -- The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. If you forget your dreams in your day-to-day routine, you won't find happiness and without dreams you can't move on.

As a child she liked to read the Berenstain Bears. Sister! Brother! She has lots of nephews and nieces. The bears are like how a family should be, like, "...you're turn to pick dessert!" Sharing.

Reading Foucault's Pendulum, by Umberto Eco. She got it at a hostel in.....DOWNTOWN SAN FRANCISCO! It's very fitting that the very reader I interview got her book exactly where I came from. She's from Australia and has been traveling for three months -- mostly in Mexico -- and was very happy to find a book in English. The problem wasn't that the hostels in Mexico had Spanish books. Rather, the problem was that the books were in German and Japanese. (We contemplated whether this was because the Germans and Japanese tourists read a lot or, because the books weren't picked up, not enough. It would have to be a question for hostel owners who keep careful tabs on the bookshelves.

Her favorite book of all time -- Haroun and the Sea of Stories, a children's book by Salman Rushdie. Her favorite part-- when Haroun sees a man fighting his own shadow.
