Reading She's Come Undone, by Wally Lamb.A favorite -- Peace Like a River, by Leif Enger. She likes the godlike qualities of the father, though she's not religious.
For the plane back to the mainland, she'll read The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd.
She did start the popular four-book Twilight series, but got about half-way through the third book and quit. She'd wished that, by that point of the story, that the main character--a teenage girl--would have grown up more and stopped whining.
